Information for residents

Reorganisation presents both opportunities and challenges for East Cambridgeshire District Council and its residents.

Benefits include the potential for improved services through more functions ‘under one roof’, clearer accountability for residents, and potential financial savings - which are explicitly expected by the government.

However, there will also be some challenges and changes that LGR will pose for our residents due to the increased size of any new unitary authority compared to the current district council.

For example, residents may see changes to services when the new unitary goes live and a possible increase in Council Tax, which thanks to our innovative and prudent approach to financing,  we have been able to keep low for the last 12 years.

We know from our council survey that access to local services and local councillors is important, as is maintaining our community identity.

Our focus over the next few years is to make sure that any changes which come into effect for the new unitary authority reflect these views and have the best interest of residents at their heart.

Have your say on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR)

We will engage with residents, businesses, stakeholders and partners in shaping the business plan that we need to submit to government by November 2025.

The government will then also formally consult on the preferred Unitary Council structure in 2026.

Residents are of course always free to engage with their local councillors about any topic – such as local government reorganisation.

East Cambs LGR survey

We are running a survey to ask residents what is important to them in East Cambridgeshire.

Results will help formulate the proposal for creating a new unitary authority, which all councils have been asked to submit to government by November 2025. This will continue to run until further notice.

This is the first of many conversations we will be having with residents over the next 3 years.

Please be assured that during the entire process, our focus remains on delivering essential services across the whole of East Cambridgeshire.
